What Have We Become?
The grand spectacle came garbed in a modern day grim reaper suit armed with a deadly chain saw, the eyes hooded in dark shades portending an ominous feeling of doom. This was meant to hold attention that titillates the movie hungry public eager to lap the scene with a sickening addiction to violence churning the moment into sensational news. The worst nightmare is coming to life!
What have we become Lord when we have lost the capacity to love? What kind of creature do we devolve into when we inflict the most pain on another by stoking their deepest fears where they cannot escape from - in the hollow corners of their mind?
The sharp metal blades surely did not pierce the skin and no blood was spilt. This is all a game - something to talk about, so laugh and enjoy it. This is not reality. But when you are at the receiving end, the pain is all too real. The movie for some may have ended when the show was over but for others caught in the surreal game of thrones, the nightmare has just begun.
This kind of game continues unabated in the person’s mind turning phantoms into real ghoulish figures. The evil and destruction it brings is unseen and the pain of guilt to those that inflicted it, to those who ignored and reveled in it is concealed in the ignominious gesture of complicity.
What have we become Lord when we derive pleasure in inflicting pain on others? What have we become when we avert our eyes from the people who receive this kind of pain? What have we become?
