A Walk With You
When I took this walk with you in life, it wasn't all that easy. There were times when the burden was just too much to carry. The main challenge you had was your inability to sustain employment. There was a cloud that followed you from one job to the next. I did not understand until much later what you were experiencing was system wide. It is called systemic discrimination.
This cancer in our society is pervasive. It is even more palpable and visceral now that it is overt. No longer pretentious and hidden, you only have to read the latest news on the plight of people of color to understand that what ails the hateful division in this country stems from an abominable idea that not all men are created equal.
I became the main breadwinner, the go-getter; I ended up with the glory that I did not all deserve. You stayed in the background but you were very much the rock. You were the pillar of strength when I felt despair and hopelessness. You were the sound of reason when everything seemed lost. You were very much the partner albeit silent in your deeds.
Life wasn't meant to be a walk in the park. It was my choice to be with you in this journey and for that, I will forever be grateful.
