The Mouth Speaks

 “Progeny of vipers, how are you able to speak good things while you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

What words do I utter that do not come from my heart?  If my heart is empty of mercy then, my words will manifest cruelty.  If my heart is filled with fear (awe, reverence) of the Lord, then my tongue will exercise prudence.  But sinful that I am, I practice little restraint and self-discipline to hold my tongue.  My wayward tongue both speaks of good and evil.  

Lord, with your Spirit help me bridle my tongue.  Let the words that fall from my lips be of love.  Let my heart pour out in abundance the mercy and grace from you.  No man has conquered the tongue but in you, oh God, everything is made possible.
