The Day is Short

“We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭90:7-10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

My day on earth is short, oh Lord and I can feel the groaning weight of aging.  I can tell that my physical body is in its slow descent marred with aches and pains.  In my youth, I could lift patients in the nursing home where I worked for 25 years and this inevitably sapped my energy.  My back and knees now interminably hurt.  My right shoulder and neck at times burn.  Time is running short.

What will you have me do when I can no longer work?  When my day is filled nursing real and imagined pain?  When my eyes begin to fail me and my strength is equal to a child?  What will you have me do when I can no longer think for myself and my mind has crept into a halting crawl?

Will you be there oh Lord to lift me from my incapacities?  Will you never leave me when I need you the most?  You are the everlasting God, unmoved, unchanged by time.  Your mighty deeds are memorialized forever; engraved in the hearts of men.  But I oh Lord am but a whiff of dust.  I am here today and gone tomorrow.  My body was not meant to last.  It is my soul that seeks eternity.
