Stone Cold Heart

“You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.” For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.

‭‭Acts‬ ‭28:26-27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Have I become numbed to the suffering I see and hear about everyday?  Am I no longer shocked at the perversities of this fallen world?  Have I turned cold, inured to the pain of others?

I may say that I am merely protecting my heart and mind from the onslaught of evil and its unmitigated attacks.  I may say that I am so small compared to the magnitude of sin that ails the world that my efforts would not even make a dent.  I may turn away from it all and say as long as I am a good person that is all that is required of me.

Or I may say, “Lord God give me the strength to carry on, to do what I can do, extend a hand, lend an ear, open my heart and mind to the painful cries of suffering, and pray, beg for your mercy.”  Prayer in itself is my offering and let me be a warrior in that front, suited to be your soldier in the fight against evil.

For what we are up against is a battle of righteous outrage over silent complicity and docility to evil.  Let my heart soften so that it can feel the cry for your mercy.  Lord God this is better than a stone cold heart.
