Pleasure

“My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and to insight, “You are my relative. ”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭7:1-4 NIV‬‬

I want the good things life offers but I don’t want to relinquish my will and control to a discipline that is unpalatable - to take up that daily cross.  It is not easy to enter into this self-sacrifice when my whole body cries out, “what about me?” and “why would this self-indulgence be bad?”

In itself, pleasure is not a sin.  Desire is inherent in our hearts and minds.  I find eating pleasurable and there is nothing wrong in that.  But like anything else, there are gradations to this spectrum of pleasure. The farther it takes as away from God’s will, the more it becomes injurious not only to physical health but also to spiritual well-being.  That is why temperance is a virtue and God through His commands and teachings is the only path to life.
