The Story of Talents

“For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he shall have in abundance. But from him who has not, even what he seems to have, shall be taken away.”

Everything that I have, God gave in His generosity.  With reason, everything belongs to God.  I am only a steward called to care for these gifts.  What this story of talents tell me is that as a steward, I have to account for what and how I used these gifts.

Did I bury it, hoard it, and store it where no one benefits from it?  Did I invest it so that many more will be touched by these gifts?  God’s gifts should be multiplied as a source of blessing and mercy for others.  Lord God help me for I am a sinner.  I sometimes get caught up with my own hype that I forget that nothing that I own I got solely on my own strength, knowledge, or power.  I sometimes think others are given more than me and the jealousy keeps me from being happy for them.  I sometimes succumbed to greed and withhold these gifts from others.  I at times feel lazy and do not want the work that is involved in increasing your gifts.

Thank you for reminding me that I am responsible for these gifts and held to its account.  Help me to freely give these gifts away without fear of destitution.  Teach me to cling to your promise that you will always provide according to what I need.  Help me to want the things I already have and not to seek beyond what becomes excessive for me.  Everything you gave is good, please show me how to use these gifts only for good to magnify you and your greater glory.
