Impediments

“And they brought someone who was deaf and mute to him. And they begged him, so that he would lay his hand upon him. And taking him away from the crowd, he put his fingers into his ears; and spitting, he touched his tongue. And gazing up to heaven, he groaned and said to him: "Ephphatha," which is, "Be opened." And immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released, and he spoke correctly.”

What keeps me from ascending beyond my nature?  What holds me from fulfilling what I was tasked to do?  What binds me from reckoning the chains of the impure and unjust?  It is my tongue, oh God the small instrument of both blessings and destruction.

I sing alleluia in the morn but weep at night for my wayward tongue.  I do not control it.  I do not hold my peace with it.  I wield it like a sword and cut many hearts.  I am guilty and I am bonded by its iniquities.  Release my impediments from curtailing my holy travels.  Stir my conscious mind to stand in attention before I let loose a torrent of empty words.  Hold my tongue in abeyance to your creeds and let my heart feel compassion instead of judgment, love without malice or hate.  Lord God help me for I am a sinner.
