Get Up

“When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”

Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.”

What kind of power is this that Jesus can raise one from the dead?  Jesus said that death is merely sleep contrary to human definition.  What I see as the end of existence is only the beginning of something new. I should banish from my heart the fear of death because I believe in the resurrection.

When Jesus walked the earth to imbue human experience, he performed many miracles such as these.  Today, the world is looking for a sign that God still exists.  People want miracles in order to believe.  The encounter with God is viewed with much drama like the parting of the red sea.  Yet miracles happen all the time without such ostentatious displays of grandeur and power.  It happens quietly in ordinary lives. People fail to see the hand of God as it passes through their lives because the eyes are shut and the hearts are stone chilled.

Lord God help me for I am a sinner.  Please give me the gift of faith.  Open my eyes and heart.  Help me to get up from my sleep of indifference.  Let my lips praise the awesome wonder of your unfailing love all the days of my life.
