Wisdom of Emma
I saw our dear neighbor Emma who lost her husband 9 years ago due to cancer. At 88, she is still very active. She was picking up dead branches in her yard and I asked if she needed any help. She invited me to her home and we talked a bit.
Our neighbor Emma and her now deceased husband Roy were the first people who welcomed us into the neighborhood when we moved here in 1994. Throughout the years, they have been very warm to us. She knew I must be feeling sad with my husband's passing and she wanted to help me.
She told me that what I am experiencing is part of grieving. She said that even after many years since her husband died, there was not a day when she felt sad not just because her husband is gone but also the life that changed forever after his death. She told me that although my mind tells me that dying is a natural process that we all will face, our heart remains tethered in the love and the life we lived with our spouse, specially if there was a deep connection.
And so she lives her life, with courage, with purpose, and with hope. Her husband is not very far away she knows and even when time had passed, he remains every bit a part of her. Emma's wisdom is born of experience and a knowledge that no one can dispel nor disprove. Her words consoled me in my time of sadness.
I am not afraid to cry again.
